Physio PoolBarbara unfortunately managed to fracture her humerus in a spectacular fall when running on pavement 6 weeks ago, and so has had her right arm largely out of action since! Luckily she has learned to type and text with her left hand and so has been able to keep busy helping co-ordinate submissions and other activities for physios to help The Physio Pool Trust keep this wonderful facility that is Dunedin’s iconic Physio Pool.

Andrew Whiley encouraged us to make a submission to the open forum of the DCC recently. Thanks to the final part of our presentation, when a very special couple Jim and Sue spoke of its importance for them in everything they do, I think it really helped Councillors realise how essential this facility is. This is not just a pool, it has 35 degree heat, range of depths, access options for people who cannot enter/exit using their legs, trained staff, close to the hospital and with flat access into the building and change areas that are clean and perfectly adequate. It has enormous benefit to patients and the Dunedin community and we need to make sure it is saved – there have been previous efforts to try and mothball it in the past, but this is the most dire time for SDHB finances, so there will need to be a joint solution found it seems.

We had a meeting on 1st October again, and it seems that the parties do want to find a solution, and once the feasibility study results are known, then it will be a case of major fundraising to ensure its future is saved once and for all! It is probably one of Dunedin’s best kept secrets: a hot pool in the middle of town, so if you have not visited it yet, do make time to go in, you will be delighted and you will certainly be helping financially!! The hospital physios take their patients in between 9-11am daily, but otherwise from 6.30am it is open). If you are currently receiving treatment, we would encourage you to go and you can take our referral letter, which entitles you to a discounted entry (10 swims for $35 – FAB!) You will notice immediate benefit I am sure – my shoulder I am happy to report achieves double the range in water, as I can do on land at 6 weeks post fracture, and the warmth helps make moving it more comfortable. So, don’t delay, get on in, and I’ll look forward to seeing you there. 🙂
