CAVERSHAM PHYSIO NEWSLETTER (No.26), July 2015

Hello again everyone,

We are happily recovering from organising our fun night fundraising for the Physio Pool – it was a great night of FUNdraising and thanks to everyone who came and danced up a storm with us and Catgut and Steel (Anna and Mike) who were teaching us “called” dances, all of our 300 attendees at Forbury Park Function Centre mixed and mingled very quickly. Not only did we manage to have fun whilst fundraising, we managed to raise over $20,000 for the Physio Pool – I am not sure of the final figure just yet as we still await a couple of accounts, but I know we are over our goal of $20,000, so YIPPEE! and MAJOR thanks to all of you who were there, helped me whenever I tapped you on the shoulder asking for a favour, gave sponsorship to help fund the catering expenses on the night, and especially to my great friends who gave me that positive encouragement throughout the 6 weeks of organising and the beautiful job they made on the day to get the room ready for the night!! Our lovely patient Gail Caldwell told us about Catgut and Steel, and not only that, she and husband Paul played and sang for us prior to Mike and Anna starting, so we are also very grateful for their great input. I am keeping the link about the dance live until early August, as I know there are so many Dunedin people who would still like to give to the pool, and it is so easy to donate through this site www.PhysioPoolDance.co.nz, : just select “0” tickets, then choose the amount you would like to “Sponsor” from the list available, or alternatively you can just google “Physio Pool Fundraising Dance” and you will find the same site that way to donate. Every cent you donate is going to the Physio Pool Trust, as all our catering expenses are well covered by our superb Major Sponsors: Orthopaedic Services (a group of our Dunedin Orthopaedic Surgeons: John Matheson, John Dunbar, Michael Chin, Chris Birks and Gary McCoubrey), Simon McMahon (another of our Orthopaedic Surgeons) and wife Kate, Mercy Hospital, School of Physiotherapy, Jim Byars of Highgate Bridge, Metro Realty, Rutter Architectural Design, and your own Caversham Physiotherapy: all our “Diamond or Platinum Sponsors” for the night. We also had key companies who helped make this successful: Forbury Park with their free venue, Forbury Bar & Grill (kindly offering us a % of bar sales), Just Essence Catering and Veggie Boys, Catgut and Steel, Centre City New World (free bubbles and juice on entry), Ritchies (Iain Campbell driving and providing a bus to get everyone quickly from watching the Highlanders at The Stadium to us at Forbury), Core Development, Immersion Marketing and Southern Colour Print for all our printing needs ……. Actually the list is endless so THANK YOU DUNEDIN for your fabulous support!! – much appreciated☺

Virtually everyone I approached I can say gave generously of their product or time to help put this together. There is just SO MUCH support for the Physio Pool – it is certainly well loved by Dunedin. There was only one memorable shop during my frantic Thursday when I toured town to ask everyone for a tiny donation of an item or voucher of $5 or less, who unfortunately stated that “Sorry, we are an Australian-owned company, and don’t donate for local fundraising”….., and then when I suggested it could just be something in their “going out bin”, the very nice girls helpfully suggested “Sorry no we can’t, but try Arthur Barnett – they are local”…..  – interesting (!), as poor Arthur Barnett, who are certainly in challenging times did generously give a couple of lovely items for our Silent Auction☺ It yet again reinforced for me just how vital it is to BUY LOCAL and SUPPORT OUR LOCAL DUNEDIN BUSINESSES – as when the chips are down (and even when the chips are not down, and these companies are hugely successful in Dunedin, as this one is!!) these companies are not interested in supporting our local community. On the flip side, everyone else was so AWESOMELY generous, including Brendon McCullum, Ben Smith, and Tony Brown, who each kindly agreed to give 1 hour of their time over brunch as three of my Silent Auction prizes on the night of the dance – and we were thrilled 2 of our 3 lucky winners were friends and Caversham Physio patients☺☺. Our ongoing raffle contains some amazing vouchers and items for you to win when drawn in 6 weeks, so do make sure you pop in and buy some tickets if you have not got any already: ($10 for 5 tickets, or $3 for 1 ticket) and I will also be selling these at the Farmers Market on Saturday 4 July. It will be drawn at the next Physio Pool fundraiser: The Casino Night on Saturday 8 August, being organised by Ingrid O’Connell at the St Kilda Bowling Club.

So do please continue to show your support for the Pool, as if we all make a small contribution, it will make a HUGE difference to this last push for fundraising to keep this amazing facility. This pool is such a beneficial place for the whole Dunedin community, and don’t forget we have referral letters here at the clinic for everyone who is currently a patient to enable you to get a cheaper swim as part of your treatment: make the most of that, however you certainly don’t have to be injured to exercise in this pool. It is available to the public on: Mon-Fri 6.30 – 9.30am, 11am-6.45pm, and on the weekends 8-11.45am ($40 for 10 swims for those with a referral, or $50 for 10 swims for all others – ie it’s VERY REASONABLE!!) and in Dunedin’s weather, it is hard to beat the pleasure of exercising in 35degrees in the centre of town☺ Do try it out if you have not been there yet – and especially all of you who danced with us on 20 June, make sure you use that free swim voucher you received with your dance ticket!!

A little update on our son Ben and his travels: he is now moving between London where he is having a lovely time heading to various races and aiming to break his PB for 800 or 1500m, in between being a wonderful tourist. He has been staying with lovely Dunedin friends: Lyndon Brown, Ben MacKay and Jesse Muir either in London or Heathfield, and doing a bit of work in between (eg cleaning bricks earning him 50 pounds a day – which has filled up the coffers very quickly!!) He has his next race in Oxford, where he hopes to see relations, before travelling to Ireland to see more of Geoffrey’s family there☺ In a month, he travels to North Korea for a week’s tour, then to Myanmar (to stay with a cousin of Barbara’s who works for UN), and then will meet up with Geoffrey, Rob Homan and Brent Halley at the World Athletics Champs in Beijing in late August – VERY EXCITING!!!!!! Margie thinks it might be time for a gals trip!!??

Nicki and Clare are holding the clinic together whilst we head off to experience the chills of Central Otago for a few days now – hopefully that white stuff doesn’t cause too many niggles this year☺ It will be fun to have a wee break with Margie during her mid-year break from Uni – she is surviving the chill of flatting in North Dunedin very well – although I notice the “ON” button of our heat pump is having a good workout during her time back at home!! She and Milly (our pointer pup) are fighting for pole position each night in front of the fire☺

We felt very sorry for all our patients in South Dunedin, Caversham and Mosgiel who were so badly affected by the floods recently. We know exactly what turmoil that creates, having suffered the same hideous experience about a decade ago. This time one of our wonderful plumber patients came to the rescue, arriving and sorting our flap valve on one drain, and disconnecting our loo downstairs and instead inserting a very effective plug for 2 days until the worry was over, which meant that what would have been certain disaster was averted. Do ask your plumber about having a similar set up, if you are vulnerable – we slept easy that night, after being extremely concerned until then! Unfortunately that was the night of our annual Marathon Seminar at Logan Park Drive …. which was looking more moat-like, than road! For the first time in 15 years, we had to cancel the evening, but happily lots of those who were coming are attending our weekly FREE training runs and walks, which depart from the clinic each Tuesday at 5.30pm, so if you would like to join us, please do – we go right through until the event.

Our next term of Pilates will be starting with Term 3, so if you are interested in joining us for next term, do please email barbara@cavershamphysio.co.nz and let her know. It will be a 10 week term, so for those who have never been before, it will be $150 for the full term. Fiona will cover the two weeks when Geoffrey is away watching Usain Bolt et al in China, so be prepared for some more athletic moves after that too!! He is enjoying adding the exercises he learned on his recent Pilates course in Auckland with exercise balls and theraband, and we’re glad you all are too!

Sadly we have news that will be affect you all – our wonderful colleague Clare Banks has decided to stop being with us at Caversham Physio from later this year. Clare will be almost irreplaceable, so we are on the hunt for a very competent, awesome physio to try and fill this massive gap, so watch this space…… Thank you SO MUCH Clare for all you have done for us and our wonderful patients in Caversham over our time working together – our first day with Clare was Ben’s first birthday, where she was slightly bemused to see us having his birthday party in the initial Caversham Physio Clinic (beside the Caversham Pharmacy) – Ben and friends assembled, high chair and all party food, and so began a lovely relationship our family has enjoyed with Clare and Austen ever since. We shall miss you enormously Clare, but thanks so much for everything you have done for us, and enabling us to take those essential regular holidays with the peace of mind that everything is all under control at work☺

Wishing you all a fun rest of our winter, and don’t forget to give, and challenge colleagues and friends to give what they can over the next month, to the Physio Pool coffers: every donation makes a huge difference and it is very easy via: www.PhysioPoolDance.co.nz.  And THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPERB SUPPORT Geoff & Barbara☺
