CAVERSHAM PHYSIO NEWSLETTER (No.25), FEBRUARY 2015
Happy 2015 everyone and we wish you all a great year with lots of happy and fun-filled outdoor activities with friends and family throughout the year.
We hope you have all seen the superb mural in Caversham, just up South Road from the clinic, with its depiction of our building – it’s great, so do make a point of seeing this work by some of Caversham’s talented artists:)
Fun filled Summer Activities of 2014/2015
Geoff set off with friends on the Alps to Ocean cycle trip late last year and had the most superb time. It is so beautiful, as you can see on our electronic newsletter/website/facebook, and well worth taking the time to bike and enjoy the gorgeous scenery between Mt Cook and Oamaru – they rode it in 3days but a more leisurely 6days is also good!
Another lovely friend decided to mark his 60th birthday in 2015 in style by running up Mt Roy!! so Rob and Geoffrey cheerfully accompanied him on that journeyJ A great achievement, and highly recommended for anyone contemplating something picturesque on their birthday – it was one of those magically clear days with blue sky and no clouds anywhere to be seen – the same day that some rather famous Dunedin sporting legends of King’s and Kavanagh got married in Wanaka.
Upcoming events:
Stadium to Surf Sunday 15 March 10km run or walk – entries before Wed 11 March to avoid late fees.
Harriers Open Day on Saturday March 28th at Caversham Harriers, 1.30pm at clubrooms. All Harriers clubs in Dunedin will have opening days around this date, so check the ODT on Thursdays for your club. Harriers at Caversham is for walkers and runners of various abilities, so do give it a try – this is a very friendly, low cost way to keep fit and meet people. Membership costs from $40 for the year, and for those under 19years is free!! – GREAT VALUE fitness regimes!!
Tues/Fri weekly Breakfast Club runs from school 7.30am If you have sons or family members who are teachers at Kings or Queens don’t forget to remind them to attend the pre-school and brekky runs– such an easy way to keep your child’s fitness up to scratch for whatever sport he is involved in, or just general fitness. The boys meet and set off from school at 7.30am each Tuesday and Friday morning from school, then return and contribute $2 for their share of the breakfast available in the catering suite. A fun start to the day which Geoff has been doing with the teachers and boys since Ben started at King’s 10 years ago.
Dunedin Park Run (5km timed event from Botanic Gardens each Saturday morning – FREE). If you are not a King’s/Queen’s person but also want to join a fun group, go online and find out more about the run each week in the Gardens. As you see, it’s just a matter of registering once, then just turn up.
Caversham Harriers Half/Full Cadbury Dunedin Marathon Information evening will be returning in June again – each year we at Caversham Physio co-ordinate a great evening to help you prepare for the annual September event – if you are thinking of doing the event for the first time, or want to improve your time from previous events through some more training, do plan to come along in June this year. For a gold coin donation, which we give to the keynote speaker’s charity of choice, you will hear the experts: Geoffrey on Injury Prevention, Megan Gibbons on Nutrition, Dave Stinson on training protocols, and our keynote speaker of the year, so everyone leaves with lots of great training knowledge 3 months before the event – plenty of time to put it all into practice. If you know anyone contemplating the event, then think about attending this year’s event in JUNE 2015. We always advertise it in the STAR and will let you know in our next newsletter more details.
Pilates at Caversham Physio is held three evenings a week. Both Geoff and Fiona did Pilates training to complement their Physio training, and find this gentle form of mat/ball-based exercise class has given great results for people with a wide variety of injuries – many of our class members describe the lasting benefits of our weekly classes and they really appreciate that they can keep themselves flexible and gain significant relief from aches and pains. We hold our clinic classes Mon/Wed/Thurs after work during school terms, so if you have not experienced Pilates yet, do ask us about it.
PILATES CLASSES
Mondays 5.30 & 6.30pm – Geoff
Wednesdays 5.30 & 6.30pm – Fiona
Thursdays 5.30pm – Fiona
Come and join our “very friendly, fun classes”. You will leave with a smile!
Our clinic is now open 6 days, with Fiona covering patients who prefer to come on Saturday mornings. Give us a call and we will fit you in. Weekdays we are here from 8am -5.30pm.
Bike to Work Breakfast 2015
We really enjoyed the FREE Spokes Dunedin co-ordinated breakfast in the Octagon last Wednesday and rate it THE BEST YET!! We arrived at 7.15am to find an epic feast thanks to Spokes volunteers and donations from DCC, Bikewise, Bike Otago, Strictly Coffee, Sanitarium, Otago Polytechnic we enjoyed: fresh fruit salad, cereal, yoghurt, bananas, croissants, fresh coffee:):) It was really well organised and a lot of fun: If you missed Dunedin’s FAB 2015 Bikers breakfast, make sure you get there in 2016!! Here’s Geoff, Barbara and our son Ben en route to Caversham and Bonus Bonds after our hearty feasting:)
Thanks to Gerry, one of Geoffrey’s cycling friends who sent in some really interesting articles recently, not only do we know that biking is FUN and such a good way to keep FIT, but also it has been confirmed that aging is directly related to our own level of inactivity (ie if you want to keep well and have quality of life as you age, you need to keep active). A study of male cyclists between 55-79 years demonstrated this very clearly – age is not what determines your quality of life as you get older – it is determined by your level of INACTIVITY!!!! The only clear link with age is your VO2 Max– but it is all modifiable by the amount of exercise you do and continue to do, SO GET/KEEP ACTIVE – it will ensure you keep yourself in the best shape possible (function of brain, heart, lungs, bones, nerves, muscle, hormones, plus general health and wellbeing can all be enhanced by regular exercise –Yay!). Another study looked at the intensity of exercise people participated in: it contributed to living healthier lives but also LONGER!! By doing “low level exercise, described as 2.5hrs of moderate intensity exercise/week participants could reduce mortality by 19%; increasing this to 1hr daily, the benefit increased to 24%, and professional cyclists, who were training up to 30hrs/wk were shown to have further health gains – so keep thinking “Use it or Lose it” and now “DO MORE and LIVE HEALTHIER for LONGER”. We have copies of: Pollock, RD, Carter, S., Vellosi, CP et al “An investigation into the relationship between age and physiological function in highly active older adults”, J Physiol (2015); plus Sanchis-Gomar, F, Olaso-Gonzalez, G., Corrella, D et al, “Increased Average Longevity Among the “Tour de France” cyclists”,. Int J Sports Med 2011; 32: 644– 647.
Survey 2015: Shortly we will be emailing surveys for 2015. We conduct surveys each year to ensure we are meeting your needs and see what we can improve on. It was great to see from 2014’s survey our patients travel to us from all over Dunedin: Portobello to Waldronville, and from the Taieri to North East Valley, and even Central! It was our staff knowledge, expertise and friendliness that you really appreciated. You rated our convenient location, opening hours, facilities and value for money as“excellent” and 100% of you would recommend us to others!! That’s great and your comments were so kind too: “your professional and knowledgeable Physios always get me fixed and you follow through!” “Your easy to understand explanations help prevent injury”. “Treatment is an enjoyable experience!” Thanks everyone, we appreciate your great feedback and suggestions.
PHYSIO POOL NEWS: The feasibility study has been completed and we wait with optimism to hear those findings. Obviously from ODT reports there are certainly no big issues, as the Pool Trust is currently able to progress to ask Community Trust organisations for funding, and then a massive Public Fundraising Campaign will commence. We must save this fabulous facility, so will no doubt all need to help save it financially. It was so good to see the DCC have put their hand up to assist and “WELL DONE COUNCILLORS” for seeing the benefit and need for this fantastic Dunedin facility – you deserve a pat on the back:) Now let’s all help save it, FOREVER!!
