CAVERSHAM PHYSIO NEWSLETTER (No.27), November 2015
Hello again everyone,
How lovely to find that Spring is actually going to arrive in style at last!! What a winter ….. but luckily our memories of it fade so rapidly with the arrival of our gorgeous weather now, and I can feel the energy in everyone as we all race around doing everything that has been accumulating during our enforced mini hibernation this year. Sadly we never made it to the snow – missing one of the best seasons ever alas alack, but next year! Our friends who did get there almost every weekend loved this winter – there’s always an upside!
We did have a very hardy group of walkers and runners with us this winter as we all trained for the half and full marathon event in September. We sadly, as you know, had to cancel our Seminar this year due to the extreme flooding that night, which must have been warning us of what was to come! I don’t think I have ever known such consistently cold Tuesday nights –we had rain, hail, sun showers, near 0 temps and chilly winds almost every week until the event, but what a great crew this year. Despite having to curtail our distances many nights, and stay in sheltered walks and runs on the flat mostly, we chattered happily around Caversham, South Dunedin, the southern part of our city, Portsmouth Drive etc and got our circulation going. It was just fantastic to see the improvement in many running distances, and the confidence and abilities grow, leading to some hugely impressive performances on the day. Many thanks again to Mary and Peter and all the other Caversham Harriers members who supported all our runners and walkers with us this year – much appreciated again 🙂 The walking group is continuing over summer with Mary and departs from various places around Dunedin, according to where walkers are based, so if you are keen for Tuesday night walks starting 5.30pm do get in touch with us and we will put you on the email list for info each week. If you think you might like to take up the challenge next year of doing the half marathon, do consider it – it’s always a fantastic event to be a part of, and also now there is the quarter marathon distance, which makes it possible for all to have a manageable option. Barbara did that one this year as she was keen to try the inaugural one, and just loved it – that southerly blast propelled everyone along to Port Chalmers in style, and it was a nice distance, so do consider getting your friends and workmates together and give it a go. We WILL have our usual June seminar with lots of tips, so come along and learn more then.

Spring at Mt Cook recently was all seasons in one day, but so perfect each afternoon. We arrived to chilly rain on Friday, woke to rolling thunder and lightning, then the day progressed to perfection as below. It was the Alfa Romeo annual gathering, so a lot of fun catching up with others from around NZ, whilst comparing restoration and how-to-fix-it notes….
The following morning we had another torrential downpour, but it made for a very cosy watching of the ABs taking on France, and we all know how well that turned out. The rain stopped at lunchtime, giving us time to bail out the couple of inches of water that had been driven in under the soft top into the footwell behind the driver’s seat on the southerly side!! Just as well we did some exercise before another sumptuous feast at the Hermitage! Meanwhile back in Dunedin Millie was having a fine old time on holiday with the Dalzells, and watching her first ever ABs encounter live …. and trying (and succeeding) to ooze her way onto Karen’s lap for a cuddle – nervous watching for dogs as well!! She’s now a 1yo and is loving this beautiful weather as much as we are – each day we go for an early morning walk on Tomahawk Beach – such a beautiful start to the day – we do a great 5km walk rain, hail, shine and there is always something exciting to find there:)
As mentioned last time, we continued to fundraise for the Physio Pool until we drew the raffle, which we did during a fundraiser organised by other friends of the Pool in August. We battled the July elements to sell tickets at The Farmers Market and in workplaces until then, generating a further $6,000 and raising in total $29,009.75 which we then handed to The Trust. We await to hear final totals with interest, but hopefully with ongoing fundraising efforts and lotteries grants the target will be met soon. In early September $890,000 of the $1million required for capital works had been raised, and $173,000 of the $500,000 for future operating costs had been raised (which included our $29,000), so a great effort everyone and thanks to you all for your contributions at the Dance and in the raffle purchasing that followed :):):):) and now don’t forget to get in there and enjoy it often!
As I mentioned last time, Geoffrey was getting very excited about his impending trip to watch the World Athletics in Beijing, and so in late August, he, Brent Halley and Rob Homan headed over to meet up with Ben and Chad Butson and soak up this most marvellous athletics event. They loved every minute of it, and despite a little ticketing hiccup initially, ended up watching from incredible seats the entire 10days. Usain Bolt’s awesome wins were some of many outstanding performances. China was remarkably reasonable cost wise, which was a bonus – I think Ben’s recent ticket to see ABs vs Namibia cost the same as the entire week of athletics….
I hope you all noticed the great pic of the “CAVY” bike rack outside our clinic in the ODT – thanks DCC for this initiative. Do please come by bike if you can, now that the weather is obliging. We have a bike lock inside the clinic at reception, so just ask if you need one. Enjoy making the most of our many cycle paths. Ben told us recently of an initiative in London where workplaces fund part of bike purchases to encourage workers to commute by bike – it is a global necessity, and everyone needs to start enjoying the benefits of commuting by bike. Embrace it!! A bike library is in the wind too, so hopefully that will be operating in a month or so too.
There is also a Caversham Community Move Me day on 7 November too, which if you live in the area, or otherwise, is a fun day to be part of – lots of prizes!! We will be having Pilates 20” try outs in the clinic with Fiona taking the groups at quarter past/quarter to between 1-3pm, and Barbara will be at a stall at Carisbrook School 1230-3.30pm, so do come and find us. Clare is also holding a taster of her exercise class for seniors at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Thorn St between 1-2pm, so you are welcome to participate and try out all activities. Our walking group will also be taking one of the Move Me Caversham routes, so please also feel free to join in and walk around our glorious suburb. Google:“Caversham Move Me” and all will come up c/o DCC events. Hope to see you there. Geoff won’t be here that day as he will be en route to New Plymouth, to bike via the East Cape to Napier with all the biking boys, so no doubt there will be more stories to tell after that trip! Thanks Clare, Fiona and Nicki for covering that week for us. Hope you are all out there enjoying this wonderful spring weather and we look forward to seeing you all out making the most of it!
Do get in touch if you want to join us for any activity: Pilates, Tues walks, Seniors exercise www.cavershamphysio.co.nz. 4877323. Geoff and Barbara
